Journal [manuscript]. 1839-1840.

Two volumes of a journal kept by George Hooper, describing his journey from London to Sydney and back between April 1839 and July 1840. The first volume, entitled "A short voyage kept by George Hooper on his going a voyage to Sidney in Australia" was written on board the "Strathfieldsay". The journal begins on Monday 8 April 1839 and concludes with the arrival in Sydney town on Friday 26 July 1839. Three lists at the back of the volume record Hooper's work from August to December 1839, the wages he was paid and his expenses for board and lodgings. The second volume begins on board the "Medway" on 15 February 1840. When this ship was damaged in a storm and returned to Sydney, Hooper went on board the "Argyle", which sailed for London on 8 April 1840. The volume ends with the entry for 29 July 1840.
